This article is at an early stage of development.

A cognitive heuristic is a cognitive shortcut that has become either hard-wired into our cognitive processes through evolution, or ingrained in those processes through learning. Cognitive heuristics are claimed to exist to somewhat counteract our cognitive limitations, which are due to the finite amount of time, information and processing power available to us.

Cognitive heuristics are the currently dominant explanation for cognitive biases.
